TMC is misusing the administration to stop opposition parties from campaigning: Shubhendu

Bhangar (West Bengal). Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Shubhendu Adhikari on Wednesday alleged that the ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal is misusing the administrative machinery to prevent opposition parties from exercising equal democratic rights in elections. The officer said that the South 24 Parganas district police is refusing to allow the BJP candidate from Yadavpur Lok Sabha seat to hold a public meeting in Bhangar assembly constituency. He said, “The police controlled by Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee does not believe in ensuring equal opportunity for every candidate.”

The official said, “We had a public meeting scheduled in Bhangar, which I was to address and the administration did not raise any objection to it till a day before. However, this morning our candidate was told that the BJP public meeting cannot be allowed as there is a Trinamool Congress public meeting at a distance of 100 meters. The irony is that no Trinamool Congress public meeting is being held within a radius of 500 meters.” The official said that despite the BJP’s appeal to the Election Commission to intervene, it (the Commission) refused to intervene and left the matter to the police and local administration.

He said, “We are law-abiding citizens. We will not hold a meeting today, but I am telling voters through the media that the multi-party democratic system in West Bengal is now in danger. Equal opportunities are missing.” Adhikari alleged that when the Communist Party of India (Marxist) held a public meeting in the assembly constituency, the police did not show such an attitude, which indicated a possible nexus between the Left and the Trinamool. Adhikari concluded his speech by claiming that “he will come here after June 4 to celebrate the BJP’s victory in the Lok Sabha”.
