two women officers of the indian navy will travel around the world by sea after 3 year training

New Delhi. Two women officers of the Indian Navy, Lieutenant Commander Roopa A. and Lieutenant Commander Dilna K. will soon circumnavigate the world by sea. Navy spokesperson Commander Vivek Madhwal said on Sunday that Roopa and Dilna will set off on a circumnavigation expedition aboard the Indian Navy’s sailing ship ‘INSV Tarini’. He said that both the women officers have been preparing for the ‘Sagar Parikrama’ expedition for the last three years.

Madhwal said, “Sagar Parikrama will be a difficult journey, which will require extreme skills, fitness and mental alertness. Both the women officers are undergoing very rigorous training. They have experience of thousands of miles of sea travel.” According to Madhwal, Rupa and Dilna are training under the supervision of world traveler and ‘Golden Globe Race’ hero Commander (Retd) Abhilash Tomy. He said that as members of a six-member crew, both the women officers took part in an inter-oceanic expedition last year, which went from Goa to Cape Town via Rio de Janeiro and returned.

According to Madhwal, after this, Rupa and Dilna had travelled by sea from Goa to Port Blair and from Port Blair to Goa in ‘dual-hand mode’. He informed that both the women officers had also successfully completed the sea journey from Goa to Port Louis in Mauritius in ‘dual-hand mode’ earlier this year.

Madhwal said, “The Indian Navy has made several significant efforts to revive the sailing tradition, emphasizing its commitment to preserve maritime heritage and promote seamanship.” He said that the Indian Navy has played a leading role in maritime sailing expeditions through training ships like INS Tarangini and INS Sudarshini and sailing vessels like INSV Mhadei and INSV Tarini.

Madhwal said, “To celebrate maritime prowess and courage, two women officers of the Indian Navy – Lieutenant Commander Roopa A. and Lieutenant Commander Dilna K. will soon embark on an extraordinary expedition to circumnavigate the globe on board the ‘INSV Tarini’.” INSV Tarini is known for circumnavigating the globe with an all-women crew under the historic ‘Navika Sagar Parikrama’ in 2017.

According to Madhwal, the next voyage of ‘INSVS Tarini’ will be an important step towards India’s maritime ventures and maritime expeditions, which will highlight the country’s growing role in global maritime activities and gender equality.
