Scranton (USA). Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday visited an ammunition factory in Pennsylvania amid extremely tight security that is producing one of the weapons needed for his country’s fight with Russian forces. His visit to America began with the inspection of the ‘Scranton Army Ammunition Plant’ and during this he will try to garner support for Ukraine in the war. He will address the annual meeting of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday and Wednesday and then hold talks with US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris in Washington on Thursday.
As Zelensky’s convoy headed to the ammunition factory on Sunday afternoon, a small contingent of supporters waving Ukrainian flags gathered around to applaud him. The area around the factory was cordoned off since morning and a large number of security personnel were deployed there. The Scranton plant is one of the few centers in the country that produces 155 mm artillery shells and has increased its production over the past year. Ukraine has already received more than 3 million 155 mm shells from the US.
As the Russia-Ukraine war enters its third year, Zelensky is now pressing the US to allow the use of long-range missiles capable of striking deep into Russia. The US Defense Ministry has said Ukraine can target Moscow with its domestically built drones but it is hesitant to allow attacks on the Russian capital with US-made missiles. Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that Russia will go to “war” with the US and its NATO allies if they allow Ukraine to use long-range weapons.
