The United Nations human rights office said it will deploy a fact-finding team to Bangladesh to investigate human rights violations linked to the excessive use of force by security forces to suppress student protests against the previous government. The office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk said it had received an invitation from the leader of Bangladesh’s interim government Muhammad Yunus to send the team to Bangladesh. He said the visit would take place in the coming weeks.

The troubles of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her aides are not decreasing. The total number of cases against them has crossed 100. These cases include murder, crimes against humanity and many serious charges. After the fall of her Bangladesh Awami League-led government on August 5 due to widespread student and public protests, the first case against Ms Hasina was registered in Dhaka on August 13. The hundredth case was registered at the International Crimes Tribunal on August 29.

Nobel Peace Prize winner Yunus took over as head of the interim government this month after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country. According to the United Nations, nearly 650 people have been killed in Bangladesh since the student movement turned violent on July 15. This figure also includes deaths that occurred after Hasina left the country on August 5.
