Sibal, on behalf of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), had reportedly issued a resolution describing the horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College as a symptom of malaise and suggested that such incidents were common.
Taking a dig at Rajya Sabha member Kapil Sibal, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Friday said he was shocked, saddened and somewhat surprised that a Member of Parliament termed acts of violence against women as symptomatic malaise. Sibal, on behalf of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), had reportedly issued a resolution that described the horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College as symptomatic malaise and suggested that such incidents are common.
Sibal was elected SCBA president in May earlier this year. How can anyone say that such incidents are common? What a shame! Dhankhar said at an event without naming anyone that I have no words to condemn such an attitude. He said that this is a huge injustice to such a high position. But I am happy that the bar members have come out in support of our girls and women. His predecessor president of the Supreme Court Bar Association and current president of the All India Bar Association, Dr Adish Aggarwal, has expressed strong objection and written a letter to the current president of the Supreme Court Bar Association, Kapil Sibal, saying that either he should withdraw this resolution and apologize or a no-confidence motion will be presented against him by the members.
“We are not aware of any deliberations of the Election Commission on the said matter that culminated in any such proposal,” Agrawal said, adding that several other executive committee members were equally surprised by the move.
