Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a three-day visit to the US. Today is the third and last day of his US visit. Prime Minister Modi also held bilateral talks with US President Joe Biden. During this, Joe Biden himself warmly welcomed PM Modi by hugging him. After this, PM Modi attended the Quad Summit. Where he gave a message to the world that India is not against anyone but in favor of peace and solution. Therefore, the whole world’s eyes were fixed on the US visit. Many announcements have been made during PM Modi’s US visit. But one program remains the most discussed topic, that is Cancer Moonshot. Actually, India has promised to give millions of dollars and vaccines for the fight against cancer. This was one of the many announcements made during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the United States. Modi announced the formation of the Quad Cancer Moonshot initiative in the Indo-Pacific to fight cancer.

What is the Cancer Moonshot?
The Quad Cancer Moonshot is an unprecedented partnership aimed at saving lives by fighting cervical cancer in the Indo-Pacific region. The Cancer Moonshot was launched in 2016 to accelerate scientific research on cancer. Then-President Barack Obama announced the launch of this program during the State of the Union on January 12, 2016. Funding for this program was provided by the 21st Century Cures Act which was passed in 2016. Obama appointed then-Vice President Biden to chair the task force. They were assigned some tasks. Such as, to suggest how to prevent cancer, how to treat it. A Blue Ribbon Panel of experts was also formed. In 2016, the Blue Ribbon Panel launched a new program for the treatment of cancer. It submitted a report, which contained 10 recommendations.

1. Creating a network for direct patients
2. Create a translational science network dedicated exclusively to immunotherapy
3. Developing ways to overcome resistance to cancer treatments
4. Build a national cancer data ecosystem
5. Intensify research on the leading causes of childhood cancer
6. Minimize the debilitating side effects of cancer treatment
7. Expand the use of proven cancer prevention and early detection strategies
8. Use past patient data to predict future patient outcomes
9. Develop a 3-D cancer atlas
10. Developing new cancer technologies
How will India help
PM Modi announced a grant of USD 7.5 million for cancer screening and diagnosis in the Indo-Pacific region. PM Modi said that India is ready to share its experience and expertise. He emphasized that this grant has been given under India’s vision of One Earth, One Health. The Prime Minister also announced that India will provide assistance for radiotherapy treatment and capacity building for cancer prevention in the Indo-Pacific. He also said that the Indo-Pacific countries will benefit from the supply of 40 million doses of vaccine from India under GAVI.

Offering technical assistance to interested countries in the Indo-Pacific region
The Prime Minister also highlighted that India has developed a vaccine for cervical cancer and is working on an artificial intelligence (AI)-based treatment protocol for the disease. India has offered technical assistance to interested countries in the Indo-Pacific region for cancer screening, care and continuity through its contribution of USD 10 million to the Global Initiative on Digital Health.
