Volleyball is a favorite game played between two teams. Each team has five players and they attempt to move a shot or ball between two teams separated by a bell or net. The sounds are mainly played between “ball” and “batsman”. The main objective of the game is to knock the ball onto your opponent’s ground and take revenge when the opposing team leaves the ball outside its own line or commits an error.

The game of volleyball quickly became popular and grew rapidly in other countries in the early 20th century. This game first spread its foot in Canada, then Cuba and then Japan. The first rulebooks for the game were produced in the early 1900s, with the first international federation being formed in 1947.

What are the rules?

Volleyball game is played by two teams of 6 players each on an indoor court 18 meters long and 9 meters wide. Matches are played in the format of best of five sets. A team scores a point when the ball falls within the boundaries of the opposing team’s court or when a player of the opposing team commits an error in play. The first team to score 25 points by a margin of two points wins the set, with each match following a best-of-five sets format. If necessary, a fifth set is played to 15 points.

In the game of volleyball, the ball can reach players at speeds of up to 130 km/h. Especially after a great jump serve or smash. Therefore, athletes need tremendous strength to stop them and lightning-quick reactions to the ball to send it to the opponent’s court.

Olympic debut

Volleyball made its Olympic debut at the Tokyo 1964 Games. The women’s and men’s competitions used a single round-robin format. Where each team was placed in the same pool and all the teams faced each other once. This format remained in force until the 1972 Olympic Games held in Munich. The format was changed to pool rounds and final rounds of quarterfinals, semi-finals and finals to determine medal winners.
