Senior Communist Party of India (CPI) leader and former minister V S Sunil Kumar said that the Pooram was disrupted due to external interference. Kumar said that I have no doubt that the disruption in Thrissur Pooram was due to external interference and there was a conspiracy behind it.
The controversy over the conduct of Thrissur’s iconic Pooram festival has heated up Kerala politics. The latest twist in the controversy has come in the form of a police investigation report into the Pooram event disruptions, which has been submitted by Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Law and Order, M R Ajith Kumar to the Home Department under Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Notably, ADGP Kumar, considered a confidant of CM Vijayan, has himself been in controversy over his meeting with RSS leaders last year. The opposition Congress-led UDF has alleged that the police disrupted the annual Pooram festival due to the ADGP-RSS meeting. BJP candidate Suresh Gopi won the Thrissur seat in the Lok Sabha elections. The issue also resonated in the CPM-led LDF. Its key ally CPI and CPM-backed independent MLA P V Anwar have also reiterated the Congress’ allegations in this regard.
It is worth noting that the opposition party Congress and the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) ally CPI criticized the alleged report filed by ADGP M.R. Ajith Kumar which claimed that there was no external interference in disrupting the prestigious Thrissur Pooram 2024 festival. The Thrissur Pooram held on May 19 was disrupted and the government had taken action against the then City Police Commissioner and Assistant Commissioner. It is being told that the ADGP submitted the investigation report in a sealed envelope before the DGP. According to reports, Ajith Kumar had filed the report, which allegedly stated that there was no external interference. The Congress criticized this alleged report and alleged that the conspirator to disrupt the Pooram has himself submitted the investigation report in this regard.
Senior Communist Party of India (CPI) leader and former minister V S Sunil Kumar said that the Pooram was disrupted due to external interference. Kumar said that I have no doubt that the disruption in Thrissur Pooram was due to external interference and there was a conspiracy behind it. I do not know what the report says. Senior Congress leader K. Muraleedharan said that his party does not trust Ajith Kumar’s report. He said that we cannot accept Ajith Kumar’s report. That is why we are adamant on demanding a judicial inquiry into the matter.
Learning from Vijayan’s stance, the CPM state secretariat said the next day that the allegations levelled by Anwar were being investigated by both the government and the party. It said Anwar was repeatedly making allegations against the government and the party through the media and claiming that the party cannot agree with his stand. The CPM state secretariat said this was providing ammunition to target his rivals.
