Prime Minister Narendra Modi has returned home after a successful and important three-day visit to the US. As per the earlier schedule, Modi was to meet Trump. Trump also spoke about his possible meeting with Modi and described the PM as a wonderful person. However, Modi preferred not to take risks and avoided meeting Trump. The Indian Prime Minister would have met Trump if he had also got a chance to meet Democratic presidential candidate and US Vice President Kamala Harris. But, she was not available at the time. Therefore, Modi decided to stay away from both the contenders Trump and Harris. Moreover, Harris is getting huge support from Indian Americans, while earlier they mostly supported Trump.

During his visit the Prime Minister attended the Quad leaders’ summit and the United Nations General Assembly session. He also addressed the Indian diaspora at an event in New York and held several bilateral meetings with several heads of state. The Prime Minister also spoke at the ‘Summit of the Future’ organised by the United Nations. PM Modi began his visit from Philadelphia in Pennsylvania, where his plane Air India One landed. He was greeted by thousands of Indian-Americans who gathered at the airport to welcome him. From there the Prime Minister went to Wilmington in Delaware, which is the home city and state of US President Joe Biden.

The warmth with which US President Joe Biden welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his private residence in Wilmington shows not only the personal chemistry between the two leaders but also the growing closeness in the relations between the two countries. PM Modi’s visit to America came at a time when the eyes of the whole world are fixed on the presidential election to be held next November. By January, either Kamala Harris or Donald Trump will be in the presidency there. But as US President Biden said while addressing PM Modi, ‘Whenever we sit together, we find new areas of cooperation’ and also that ‘the relations between the two countries are stronger today than at any time in the past.
