If President Ranil Wickremesinghe contests in the presidential elections proposed in Sri Lanka at the end of this year, he may face Vijayadas Rajapaksa, who currently holds the post of Justice Minister in his cabinet. Sri Lanka Freedom Party President Maithripala Sirisena said that Rajapaksa will be the party’s candidate in this year’s parliamentary elections.

Colombo. If President Ranil Wickremesinghe contests the presidential elections proposed later this year, he may face Vijayadas Rajapaksa, who currently holds the post of Justice Minister in his cabinet. Former President and Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Chairman Maithripala Sirisena told reporters on Wednesday that Rajapaksa, 65, will be the party’s candidate in the parliamentary elections to be held before November 15 this year.

“He would be the most suitable candidate from the SLFP,” Sirisena said. Wijayadasa Rajapaksa is a member of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), a faction of United People’s Freedom Alliance members close to former leader Mahinda Rajapaksa. One faction of the SLPP is associated with 75-year-old Wickremesinghe while the other faction supports the political alliance Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJP) led by opposition leader Sajith Premadasa. The SLPP is unlikely to field candidates close to Rajapaksa as the party struggles to contest 2022 elections following the mass protests. The protesters blamed the ruling Rajapaksa family for the country’s unprecedented economic crisis.
