Kolkata. Lucknow Super Giants’ newly appointed mentor Zaheer Khan has recommended retaining the impact player rule in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as he believes it will greatly improve Indian cricket. Zaheer took over the role of mentor in the Lucknow team on Wednesday. The post was vacant after the departure of current India head coach Gautam Gambhir at the end of 2023. Zaheer told reporters here, “There has been a lot of discussion about the impact player rule. I believe this rule should be retained.”
The impact player rule was implemented in IPL 2023, which received mixed reactions. Virat Kohli said last season that it has disturbed the balance of the game while Indian captain Rohit Sharma admitted that he is not a big fan of this rule. During the meeting between IPL team owners and Board of Control for Cricket in India officials in July, the team was not unanimous on the impact player. But Zaheer believes that this will give a lot of opportunities to young players of India.
He said, “This will definitely give opportunities to the young players of India. You will see its effect in the mega auction when the franchise teams will have their eyes on such players.” The fast bowler said, “With young players getting such opportunities, Indian cricket will improve a lot in the future. There is no comparison to match practice and this is the biggest positive aspect of this rule.
