97 percent of rs 2000 notes returned notes worth rs 7261 crore still with people

Mumbai. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said that 97.96 percent of the notes of Rs 2000 value have returned to the banks. People still have notes worth Rs 7,261 crore. The RBI had announced the withdrawal of bank notes worth Rs 2000 from circulation on May 19, 2023. The central bank said that the total value of Rs 2000 bank notes in circulation at that time was Rs 3.56 lakh crore at the end of business. It came down to Rs 7,261 crore at the end of business on August 30 this year.

RBI said in the statement, “Thus, 97.96 percent of the banknotes of Rs 2000 in circulation have returned to the banks as on May 19, 2023.” The facility of depositing or exchanging two thousand rupees banknotes was available in all bank branches in the country till October 7, 2023. The facility of exchanging banknotes of this value is available in 19 issue offices of the Reserve Bank from May 19, 2023. From October 9, 2023, RBI’s issue offices are also accepting banknotes of Rs 2000 from individuals and institutions for depositing them in their bank accounts.

Besides, people can send Rs 2000 notes from any post office in the country to any issue office of RBI to get the amount credited to their bank accounts. The 19 RBI offices that accept deposit/exchange of banknotes are located at Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna and Thiruvananthapuram. Rs 2000 banknotes were introduced in November 2016 after demonetisation of Rs 1000 and Rs 500 banknotes.
