New Delhi. Becoming the head coach of the Indian football team is a dream come true for Manolo Marquez, but on Sunday the Spaniard said that it would be better if an Indian coaches the national team in future. Last month, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) appointed 55-year-old Marquez as the head coach of the national men’s team for three years, replacing Igor Stimac. Marquez will continue in his role as the head coach of FC Goa during the 2024-25 season. He will handle the responsibilities of both the club and the national team. After this, he will fully take over the coaching role of the Indian team from 2025.

In his first press conference after his appointment as India’s head coach, Marquez said, “Apart from Spain, I have spent the most years in India. A long time ago I thought I would like to become the head coach of the national team and now I am here. It is like a dream come true.” Marquez said, “In future, the national team coach should be an Indian because he (Indian) will know better how the country works and he knows people from different parts of the country. So this should be the goal of Indian football in the coming years.”

He has been in India since 2020. He has spent three seasons with Hyderabad FC and one season (2023-24) with FC Goa. His first international tournament will be the three-team Inter Continental Cup which India will host in Hyderabad from September 3 to 9. Syria and Mauritius are the other two teams in the tournament. He will then guide the team in the VFF Three Nations Series to be played in Vietnam from October 9 to 15. It includes hosts Vietnam and India as well as Lebanon.
