Despite winning consecutive gold medals at the Para Shooting World Cup, Mona Agarwal is unable to raise the money needed to buy a new wheelchair, which is affecting her preparations for the Paris Paralympic Games. The 37-year-old is a polio survivor and competes in the 10m air rifle (SH1) category in para shooting. She had secured India’s ninth and final quota for the Paralympic Games by winning a gold medal at the Para Shooting World Cup in New Delhi in March.

Mona, a mother of two, then won another gold medal in the Para World Cup in Changwon, Korea in April. She spent all the money she received from sponsors to buy a rifle and travel to the competition in Korea at her own expense. Now she has no money left to buy a wheelchair. Mona told PTI from Jaipur, “After my success in the Para World Cup in Delhi, I was expecting to be included in the Target Olympic Podium Program (TOPS) but I don’t know why there was so much delay.”

She said, “I have written several mails to the Sports Authority of India and informed them that I need financial help as I have to upgrade some equipment for the Paralympics.” The shooter said, “I had received Rs 15 lakh from my sponsor for the current year which I spent on buying a rifle and participating in the competition in Korea. I went to the World Cup played in Korea at my own expense. I need about six lakh rupees to buy a new wheelchair.
