YEARS

A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Mishra said the government is conducting fresh exams on August 21 and the students, numbering around nine lakh, should now have some kind of “certainty”.

The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a fresh petition filed against the government’s decision to cancel the UGC-NET exam. The petition was filed by some examinees challenging the government’s move following the alleged question paper leak. The apex court said that considering it (petition) at this stage would create chaos. A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Mishra said that the government is conducting a fresh exam on August 21 and the students, who are around nine lakh, should now have some kind of “certainty”.

The CJI refused to entertain the petition filed by Praveen Dabas and others, saying that the Supreme Court stepping in now would have serious ramifications and lead to chaos all around. The bench said that the exam was conducted on June 18 and a day after that it was cancelled. The CJI said that entertaining the petition at the current stage would only lead to uncertainty and utter chaos. He said that after the NEET-UG fiasco, the central government should have been “doubly cautious” and hence cancelled it. Let this process go on.

Earlier, the apex court had dismissed a PIL on the issue saying it was filed by a lawyer. The CJI told the lawyer, why are you (lawyer) coming? Let the students come here themselves. He said that while rejecting the above PIL, we do not express anything on the merits.
