South Africa’s African National Congress will not consider any demands from potential coalition partners that President Cyril Ramaphosa step down, a top party leader said, as the ANC attempts to forge a united front to form a government after losing its 30-year majority in an election result.

Cape Town. South Africa’s African National Congress (ANC) party will not consider any demands from potential coalition partners for President Cyril Ramaphosa to step down, a top party leader said on Sunday. The ANC is striving to form a united front to form a government after losing its 30-year majority in an election result. As South Africa moves towards a round of complex negotiations to form its first national coalition government and establish stability, ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula said Ramaphosa will remain the party’s leader and it is unacceptable for other parties to demand his resignation to move the talks forward.

“President Ramaphosa is the president of the ANC and if other parties demand that he resign, that will not be accepted,” Mbalula said in the first public comments from the ANC leadership since the historic election results. He said the ANC was ready to negotiate with every other political party in an attempt to form a government but “no political party can dictate terms to us.” Mbalula acknowledged the ANC, which has dominated South African politics since the end of apartheid in 1994, had suffered heavy losses in the election but said it was not defeated. The ANC won just over 40 percent of the vote, well short of a majority.
