Dhaka: A fresh complaint was filed at the Bangladesh International Crimes Tribunal on Tuesday, accusing former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 23 others of committing crimes against humanity and genocide during a rally organised by an Islamist group in May 2013. Supreme Court lawyer Gazi MH Tamim filed the complaint on behalf of Hefazat-e-Islam joint general secretary (education and law) Mufti Harun Izhar Chowdhury, The Daily Star newspaper reported.

“We have registered the complaint and the investigation has begun today,” Ataur Rahman, deputy director (administration) of the investigating agency, was quoted as saying by the paper. “Once we complete the preliminary investigation and inspect the scene of the incident and when the tribunal is reconstituted, we will appeal for an arrest warrant against the accused through the prosecution,” he added.

The complaint accuses Hasina and 23 others of committing crimes against humanity and genocide during the Hefazat-e-Islam rally at Shapla Chhatar in Motijheel on May 5, 2013. This is the fourth complaint filed with the International Crimes Tribunal accusing the former prime minister. Sheikh Hasina resigned as prime minister on August 5 and fled the country to India after massive protests against her government over the controversial reservation system in government jobs.
