Ajit Pawar got a big shock on Tuesday before the Maharashtra Assembly elections. Over 600 party workers and office-bearers of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) from the Pune city unit resigned. The angry workers were protesting against the Governor’s decision of not giving MLC post to Pune City President Deepak Mankar. The development occurred on the same day when the Election Commission of India announced the schedule for the state assembly elections.

The mass resignation included prominent names like city vice president, assembly constituency chief, various cell chiefs and party workers. Specifically, the city unit had demanded Mankar’s appointment to one of the three MLC seats allotted to the party from the Governor’s quota. However, the NCP decided to re-nominate people with existing family connections in politics. He also prepared a memorandum to be submitted to the party’s national president and deputy CM Ajit Pawar, expressing disappointment and disillusionment.
He said that Mankar has strengthened NCP in Pune city and hence he deserves the MLC seat. He stressed that this insult would weaken the party in future. In their memorandum, the leaders said, “We had faith that Ajit Pawar would provide justice to the party workers. However, our trust has been broken by depriving Deepak Mankar of the MLC seat.” Meanwhile, NCP Pune city vice president Datta Sagare said, “600 party workers resigned from their posts today in protest against our top leadership depriving Pune city president Deepak Mankar of the MLC post from the Governor’s quota. “
