Taipei: China on Monday accused two Chinese citizens of spying for Britain, the development coming amid strained ties between the two countries. In a message on social media, China’s main intelligence service, the Ministry of State Security, said it had uncovered a major espionage case involving a couple. They were allegedly recruited by Britain’s foreign intelligence agency MI6 and were identified only by their surnames Wang and Zhou. Wang went to Britain as a student in 2015 and his wife later joined him, the ministry said.

The ministry said Wang was given hotel rooms, travel expenses across the country and financial incentives. It said the couple worked for an agency for the Chinese government and handled confidential government documents, which they passed on to MI6. The ministry said the matter was still under investigation. Dave Peres, a spokesman for British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, said it was “Britain’s policy not to comment on the work of its intelligence agencies.” The charges come after British prosecutors recently charged several people with allegedly spying for Chinese authorities.
