Copenhagen. A man attacked Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in Copenhagen on Friday, local media reported. Police confirmed that “an incident” took place with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on Friday and a 39-year-old accused has been arrested. He will appear in Copenhagen District Court on Saturday for pre-trial detention. Police did not give details and it was also not clear whether Frederiksen was injured.

The Prime Minister’s Office told Denmark’s public broadcaster DR on Friday that Frederiksen was shocked by what happened. Two eyewitnesses to the incident, Anna Ravn and Mary Adrian, told the daily BT that they saw a man coming towards Frederiksen and pushing her shoulder hard, causing her to move aside. They said the Prime Minister did not fall. Politicians at home and abroad condemned the alleged attack. Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersen said the attack on a democratically elected leader was also an attack on our democracy.

European Council President Charles Michel condemned the incident on social media platform X and called it a cowardly attack. EU parliamentary elections are currently being held in Denmark and the remaining 27 countries and will end on Sunday. Frederiksen is campaigning alongside the Social Democrats’ EU lead candidate Kristel Schaldemoes. Media reports said the attack was not linked to any campaign event.
