After violent clashes broke out in Bangladesh over protests against job reservation, Mamata Banerjee had spoken about her commitment to providing shelter to Bangladeshi refugees under the UN resolution. Her remarks came during a public event in Kolkata, where she expressed her willingness to help those affected by the violence.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee hit back at the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) for objecting to her remarks on providing shelter to violence-hit Bangladeshi refugees. Banerjee said, “I know the federal structure very well. I have been an MP seven times, I have been a Union minister twice. I know the policy of the Ministry of External Affairs better than anyone else. They should not teach me a lesson. They should learn from this.” After violent clashes broke out in Bangladesh over protests against job reservation, Mamata Banerjee had talked about her commitment to provide shelter to Bangladeshi refugees under the UN resolution. Her remarks came during a public event in Kolkata, where she expressed her willingness to help those affected by the violence.

She said at the Trinamool Congress’ ‘Shaheed Diwas’ rally that if helpless people knock at the door of Bengal, we will definitely give them shelter. Expressing displeasure over Banerjee’s remarks, Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry said through diplomatic channels that her comments could create confusion and mislead the public. The Foreign Ministry confirmed that it had received a written objection from Dhaka over Mamata Banerjee’s remarks. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that matters related to foreign relations are the prerogative of the central government.

Jaiswal said that under the Seventh Schedule of our Constitution – List One – Union List – Item 10, the conduct of foreign affairs and all matters which bring the Union into relation with any foreign country is the sole prerogative of the Central government.
