Unite the Union said Britain’s steelworkers union has announced continued industrial action by 1,500 workers at Tata Steel’s Port Talbot and Newport Llanwern plants to protest cuts as it shuts down its old blast furnaces.

London: Britain’s Steel Workers Union has announced continued industrial action by 1,500 workers at Tata Steel’s Port Talbot and Newport Llanwern plants to protest against retrenchment. Tata Steel has retrenched workers due to the closure of its old blast furnace, against which the said action will be taken. Industrial action means a temporary display of dissatisfaction by employees. It includes strike or reduction in work.

Unite the Union said on Thursday that its workers would continue protests as per rules from June 18 until the company withdraws its decision to shut the blast furnace. Unite the Union general secretary Sharon Graham said Tata’s disastrous deal with the current government would benefit its other overseas operations. Tata Steel said it was disappointed by the move and reiterated its concerns about the ballot process.

A Tata Steel spokesperson said, “We have written to Unite Union twice during the ballot process and again this week to inform them about the significant irregularities in the ballot process. We will continue to review and consider our next legal steps. ” Tata Steel in April decided to invest 1.25 billion pounds to adopt state-of-the-art electric arc furnaces at its Port Talbot steelworks in Wales and close two old blast furnaces.
