A top court in Islamabad has stayed the execution of five former Pakistan Navy officers sentenced to death by a military court in the 2014 naval dockyard attack case. Islamabad High Court Judge Babar Sattar issued the written order on the request of the naval officers after a hearing held a day earlier, reports Dawn News.

The lawyers for the petitioners argued that the documents meant to be shared with their clients, including the abstracts of evidence and the investigative court, were also not shared with them. The lawyers claimed that the appeal against the death sentence was filed and dismissed without access to these documents, adding that the reasons for upholding the sentence by the appeal court were not shared with the petitioners. The lawyers also said that despite the court’s order, they were given limited access to the documents and this prevented the petitioners from defending their rights.
