Indian Olympic Association (IOA) Athletes Commission Chairperson MC Mary Kom has said that she has stopped giving suggestions to the National Olympic Committee as her views are not taken into consideration. Mary Kom was among the top 10 players who were selected in the IOA Sports Commission in November 2022. There is currently a tussle going on in the IOA in which a section of office bearers are raising questions on the functioning of President PT Usha. Usha, however, has denied all the allegations against her.
When asked about the ongoing power struggle in the IOA, Mary Kom told PTI, “I am not involved in the functioning of the IOA. We shared many things with IOA, but they did not listen to me. They don’t listen to my suggestions. I don’t know politics and I don’t want to blame anyone.” Indian boxers returned from the Paris Olympics without a medal and Mary Kom was extremely disappointed with the result.
Mary Kom, 41, regretted that no one in the Indian Boxing Federation sought her help before the Olympics. “I can’t tell what went wrong because they didn’t invite me,” she said. They could have used my experience. I can tell the boxers their weaknesses and strengths.” London Olympics 2012 bronze medalist Mary Kom feels that unless the coaching structure is improved, medals will not come regularly.
