Gandhinagar. Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) has been launched across the country since 2014 under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the aim of completely freeing India’s cities from garbage heaps. A provision of Rs 1,41,600 crore has been made by the Central Government for the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) 2.0 announced in 2021. The second phase of Swachh Bharat Mission will run till 2025. As a result of the unprecedented work done under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel in this phase, Gujarat has become the top performing state in the country in terms of garbage disposal from cities.
95 percent (210 lakh tonnes) of waste disposed from dump sites in Gujarat cities.
According to Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) 2.0 data, out of 221 lakh tonnes of waste deposited in 140 dump sites in Gujarat, 210 lakh tonnes of legacy waste (waste collected over many years) has been disposed of so far. After disposal of 95 percent of the waste, now only 5 percent of the waste is left to be disposed. Gujarat ranks top among the big states of the country in terms of disposal of garbage heaps. A total of 2426 dump sites with waste quantity of 1000 tonnes or more have been identified under Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) Phase-2, out of which 140 dump sites are in Gujarat.

75 percent area cleared, 698 acres of land vacant
Even among states with dump sites spread over an area of 500 acres or more, Gujarat tops the country in terms of vacating the site area and taking it back for re-use. Out of the 930 acre area of the dump site in Gujarat, 698 acres have been vacated, resulting in 75 per cent of the space being reclaimed. The two largest dump sites in the state (Pirana and Bopal) are in Ahmedabad, where 129 lakh tonnes of waste is disposed. Out of the total area of 90 acres of these dump sites, 46 acres has been vacated. The largest area covered with garbage in India is in Maharashtra (3352 acres), while the least area is in Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Mizoram (3 acres). The dump site area in the capital Delhi is spread over an area of 202 acres, out of which no area has been vacated yet. At the same time, Tamil Nadu has vacated the maximum area of 837 acres, which is 42 percent of the total area of 1954 acres.

Land worth Rs 300 crore vacant, processing plants to be set up in municipal areas
Under Legacy Waste Management, land worth Rs 201.2 crore has been vacated in 8 metropolitan municipal areas of the state while land worth Rs 109.6 crore in municipal areas has been vacated. In the coming time, plants for processing solid waste will be set up on vacant sites in 157 municipal areas, which will become operational by March 2025.
Regarding this important achievement of Gujarat, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said, “The dream of Clean India that Mahatma Gandhi had seen is coming true due to the leadership and honest efforts of our Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
