The Uttar Pradesh government has strongly opposed petitions challenging its directive requiring shop owners to display their names along the Kanwar Yatra route, citing the imperative of maintaining law and order.

The Supreme Court has continued its interim order staying the instructions issued by some state government authorities, which said that eateries on the Kanwar Yatra route should display the names of the owners outside such shops. The Supreme Court today said that eateries will not be forced to display the names of the owner or employee, anyone can do so voluntarily. According to the information, the next hearing in this case will be on Monday.

Earlier, the Uttar Pradesh government has strongly opposed the petitions challenging its directive requiring shop owners to display their names on the Kanwar Yatra route, citing the imperative of maintaining law and order. The state government explained in its plea to the Supreme Court that the directive was implemented to maintain peace during the Hindu pilgrimage. The directive was implemented following complaints from Kanwarias, who reported confusion due to the names of shops and eateries.

Police officials acted to address these concerns and ensure a seamless experience for pilgrims. Earlier, the Supreme Court had temporarily halted the implementation of this directive, stating that though food vendors can display the types of food they serve, they cannot be compelled to display their names. The state government clarified that there are no restrictions on food vendors, except for the ban on the sale of non-vegetarian items. The requirement to display the names of shop owners is aimed at increasing transparency and avoiding confusion among pilgrims.
