The decision on whether Vinesh Phogat will get the silver medal after being disqualified before the final is going to be taken within a few hours. The ad hoc division of the Court of Arbitration for Sports has completed the hearing on Vinesh’s appeal. Ever since Vinesh has appealed, crores of Indians have been waiting for the decision, now this wait is going to end, the decision will come today on August 10 at 9.30 pm.
This decision of CAS can not only change the fate of Vinesh Phogat, but can also make a difference in India’s medal tally. If the decision comes in favor of Vinesh Phogat, she will become the first player to win a silver medal in wrestling. Her medal will also take India higher in the tally. Currently India has won a total of 6 medals, if Vinesh gets a medal, India will have 7 medals.
What is the whole matter?
Vinesh Phogat of India competed in the 50 kg wrestling category at the Paris Olympics. She won all three matches on the first day and made it to the finals. When her weight was measured on the second day, it was found to be 100 grams more than the prescribed limit. After this, she was disqualified. The person whom Vinesh defeated in the semi-finals was promoted and given a place in the finals. Vinesh neither got a medal nor was she given any ranking.
Let us tell you that Vinesh Phogat has appealed in the Court of Arbitration for Sports. She has not challenged the disqualification, but has demanded a joint silver medal for herself. Vinesh says that she has been declared finalist but it was not so till she won the semi-final. Therefore, she should get a silver medal for reaching the final. Senior advocates of India Harish Salve and Vidushpat Singhania are fighting for Vinesh.
