The Ministry of External Affairs on Friday confirmed that Pakistan has sent an invitation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting to be held in October. However, no additional details were released by the ministry on whether PM Modi will visit Pakistan. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that we have received an invitation from Pakistan for the SCO summit. We have no update on this. We will tell you the status later. Pakistan’s Foreign Office confirmed on Thursday that it has sent an invitation to PM Modi for the meeting.

PM Modi has been a regular attendee of the summit of heads of state, though he did not attend this year’s one in Kazakhstan apparently because it clashed with a parliament session in early July. The SCO is one of the few multilateral forums where India and Pakistan have managed to work together despite the hostility in relations since the failed attempt to restart the dialogue process in 2015 and the subsequent terrorist attacks.

While Indian delegations have travelled to Pakistan to participate in SCO exercises and vice versa, Pakistan’s then foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari visited India last year for the SCO foreign ministers’ meeting. This cooperation is made possible by the SCO charter which does not allow member-states to raise bilateral issues.
