The Phulpur Lok Sabha seat of Prayagraj (Allahabad) in Uttar Pradesh, which used to be the parliamentary seat of the country’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, has led to a tussle between the Congress and the Samajwadi Party over the claim for the by-election to the Phulpur assembly seat falling under it. The SP is not ready to leave this seat while the Congress is demanding the Phulpur seat for itself citing history. Overall, the date of the by-election to be held on the Phulpur assembly seat may not have been announced, but the politics heated up when Congress leaders staked claim on it. However, within 24 hours, SP state president Shyamlal Pal made it clear that Congress is included in the Indi alliance, but only SP’s candidate will contest in the Phulpur by-election.

The same SP leaders, officials and workers seem to be confident that the Samajwadi Party will field its own candidate on this seat, but the very next moment, Congress State Organization Minister Anil Yadav, who came to Prayagraj, created a stir by saying that Congress will claim this seat on behalf of the alliance.
According to the reason given behind the claim, this has been a traditional seat of the Congress. In such a situation, the state Congress unit will strongly put forward its case before the top leadership. In the last Lok Sabha elections, SP got more votes than BJP in this assembly constituency. In the assembly elections held in the year 2022, party candidate Mujtaba Siddiqui lost by a few votes. In such a situation, under the Indi alliance, this seat is with the SP.
