On the strength of Patel’s half-century, America defeated 2009 champion Pakistan in the Super Over. Patel said in the post-match press conference, “We should have won in the stipulated time and this match should not have gone into the Super Over. The patience with which we played and scoring 18 runs in the Super Over gave us the upper hand.”
When asked what was being discussed in the team at that time, he said, “We were just saying that there is no pressure on us. All the pressure is on Pakistan. We knew that the crowd is more with Pakistan. This will be a burden on them and if we play well, then the pressure will be more on them.” Patel, born in Anand, Gujarat, said that his team bowled brilliantly in the powerplay.
He said, “We did not let them score in the six overs of the powerplay and kept them under pressure. This helped us. Our target was to bowl first after winning the toss. We knew that the fast bowlers would get help in the first half hour. A target of 160 runs could have been achieved on this ground.
