With 99 seats in the Lok Sabha amid the India Bloc’s strong performance in the general elections, the Congress is now entitled to claim the post of Leader of the Opposition in Parliament. As a result, the demand for Rahul Gandhi to take up the coveted post is growing stronger. Earlier in the day, Congress MP-elect Manickam Tagore in a post on X urged the former party president to become the leader of the Congress in the lower house.

Tagore, who won from Virudhunagar in Tamil Nadu, said that I sought votes in the name of my leader Rahul Gandhi. I believe he should be the leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha. I hope the elected Congress MPs will also think the same. Let’s see what the Congress Parliamentary Party decides. We are a democratic party. Congress Rajya Sabha MP Vivek Tankha also reiterated the same and said, “Rahul ji led the campaign. He was the face. He is bound to take the responsibility of leading the Lok Sabha Parliamentary Party. Rahul Gandhi cannot take all the decisions. Some decisions will definitely have to be taken by the party leaders/MPs unanimously.”

Congress leader Karti Chidambaram said, “…I think this position will come to the Congress. My personal opinion is that Rahul Gandhi himself should take over as the leader of the opposition on behalf of the Congress.” Rahul Gandhi, who quit as Congress president after the grand old party’s defeat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, is being credited by the party for its spectacular comeback in 2024. Not just Congress leaders, even Shiv Sena (Uttar Pradesh) MP Sanjay Raut also praised Gandhi. Raut said at a press conference that if Rahul Gandhi is ready to accept the leadership, why would we object? He has proved himself as a national leader many times. He is one of the popular leaders… We all want and love him. There is no objection or difference of opinion in the alliance.
