Vanakkam Poorvottar: Himanta Biswa Sarma does not want Muslim votes! He is running fast on the path of Hindutva

If we look at the Lok Sabha elections, three Chief Ministers of BJP-ruled states are once again looking very aggressive about Hindutva. One is Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The other is Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav. Apart from this, Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is often in the headlines, is also constantly running fast on the pitch of Hindutva. In recent times, Himanta Biswa Sarma’s statements and work have been such that it clearly seems that he has somewhere embarked on the path of aggressive Hindutva. However, Himanta Biswa Sarma’s obsession of becoming the poster boy of Hindutva is not from today. He had taken the path of hardcore Hindutva as soon as he joined the BJP.

His continuous statements against Muslims, along with the decisions taken regarding obstruction of Muslim marriages in the name of child marriage and Jumme ki Namaaz, clearly show that Himanta is running fast on the path of Hindutva. Today itself, the Assam Legislative Assembly will end the two-hour leave given to Muslim MLAs to offer Namaaz on Friday. Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted that by ending the 2-hour Jumma leave, the Assam Legislative Assembly has prioritized productivity and removed another relic of colonial burden. He further wrote that this practice was started in 1937 by Syed Saadulla of the Muslim League. My gratitude to Speaker Biswajit Daimary and our MLAs for this historic decision.
Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday attacked the opposition, claiming that they have developed a tendency of not allowing “Hindu MLAs who are originally residents of the state” to put forth their views in the assembly. During the discussion on the Assam Land and Revenue Regulation (Second Amendment) Bill, 2024, Sharma also strongly criticised the opposition members for disrupting the speech of his party MLA Bhuwan Pegu. Defending Pegu, Sharma said, “A new trend has emerged of not allowing Hindu MLAs who are originally residents of the state to speak in the House. This is a dangerous trend. Please don’t be so aggressive. After our land, don’t try to capture the assembly now.” Pegu was making a statement referring to old assembly records about the alleged migration and aggression of people from the then East Bengal to Assam. The Chief Minister said, you cannot stop talking about Hindu-Muslim issues. These are the harsh realities of life.
Earlier, he had said that he would be partisan and would not allow ‘Miyan’ Muslims to take over Assam. Sharma was speaking in the assembly in connection with the adjournment motion of opposition parties on the law and order situation in the state in the backdrop of the rape and murder of a 14-year-old girl in Nagaon. He said that if the population growth was kept under control, the crime rate would not have increased. Sharma said, “Not even a single case of rape is acceptable. However, if the population growth is taken into account along with the number of rape cases in the last few years, the crime rate has come down. There has been a lot of improvement in the last 10 years.
When opposition MLAs raised their voices, the chief minister questioned, “Why do you get angry when we talk about minorities? Has the Congress declared that it does not need the majority community?” Sharma targeted Congress and AIUDF MLAs and said, “You are competing for minority votes, I am not in the race.” When the opposition accused him of being biased, Sharma hit back, “I will be biased. What can you do?”

The Assam Assembly on Thursday passed a bill for compulsory government registration of marriages and divorces of Muslims. The Assam Muslim Marriage and Divorce Compulsory Registration Bill, 2024 was introduced by Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Jogen Mohan on Tuesday. Responding to questions, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma said that all previous registrations done by the Kazis will remain valid and only new marriages will come under the purview of the law. He said, we are not interfering at all in marriages performed according to Islamic customs under Muslim Personal Law. Our only condition is that marriages prohibited by Islam will not be registered. Sharma said that the implementation of this new law will completely stop child marriage registration.
