When asked about contesting the assembly elections with India Alliance, Delhi minister Gopal Rai said that it was clear from the beginning that India Alliance was formed for the Lok Sabha elections. We fought the Lok Sabha elections together but there is no alliance in the country for the Delhi assembly elections.

The Aam Aadmi Party on Thursday made it clear that the party will contest the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections alone. The party’s Delhi convenor Gopal Rai said that the alliance with the Congress was only for the Lok Sabha elections. He clarified that there will be no alliance with the Congress for the Delhi Assembly elections to be held in early 2025. It is worth noting that this statement of Rai came after the AAP held a meeting with its MLAs on Thursday.

When asked about contesting the assembly elections with India Alliance, Delhi minister Gopal Rai said that it was clear from the beginning that India Alliance was formed for the Lok Sabha elections. We fought the Lok Sabha elections together but there is no alliance in the country in the Delhi assembly elections. We will fight the assembly elections together with the people of Delhi. Before the Lok Sabha elections, we saw AAP and Congress forming a pre-poll alliance, the purpose of which was to prevent division of anti-BJP votes. The same AAP which once established itself as a strong force in the capital by riding on the anti-incumbency wave against the Congress.

However, this did not benefit either party. The BJP won all seven seats while India Block remained at the second spot. Both parties failed to capitalise on this as the BJP maintained its dominance over the capital’s voters. In the 2019 general election, the BJP got 56.7% of the votes in Delhi while the AAP and Congress got 18.2% and 22.6% votes respectively. However, this election saw a strategic alliance between the AAP and the Congress, with the Congress fielding its candidates in three constituencies and the AAP in four constituencies.
