Jammu: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar on Friday said the Election Commission is committed to holding elections in Jammu and Kashmir at the earliest and no internal or external force will be allowed to influence the election process. Addressing a press conference here, Kumar said all parties in Jammu and Kashmir are “strongly supporting” holding assembly elections. “We are committed to holding elections in Jammu and Kashmir at the earliest and no internal or external force will be allowed to influence the election process,” he said.

He said, “All political parties in Jammu and Kashmir are strongly supporting the holding of assembly elections as soon as possible.” A delegation of the Election Commission led by Kumar is on a three-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir to review the preparations of administrative and security agencies for the elections. The delegation also includes Election Commissioners Gyanesh Kumar and S.S. Sandhu. Officials said that on Friday, the second day of the visit, the delegation met Jammu and Kashmir Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo and Union Territory Police Chief R.R. Swain.

Assembly elections have not been held in Jammu and Kashmir since 2014. Elections were to be held in early 2019 after the dissolution of the erstwhile state’s assembly in 2018. However, after Jammu and Kashmir was divided into two union territories in August 2019, assembly elections could not be held due to various reasons, one of which was delimitation, which was completed in 2022. In December last year, the Supreme Court directed the central government to conduct assembly elections by 30 September 2024.
