Four Indian medical students drowned in a river in St. Petersburg, Russia, one rescued

According to reports, the four students – two boys and two girls aged 18-20 years – were studying at the nearby Novgorod State University in the city of Veliky Novgorod. Russian media reported that an Indian student got into trouble after venturing out of the Volkhov river bank and her four companions tried to rescue her. Three others also drowned in the river while trying to save her.

Four Indian medical students drowned in a river near St Petersburg in Russia, the Indian mission in the country confirmed on Friday and said they were coordinating with Russian authorities to send their bodies to their relatives as soon as possible. According to reports, the four students – two boys and two girls in the age group of 18-20 years – were studying at the nearby Novgorod State University in Veliky Novgorod city. Russian media reported that an Indian student who went out of the bank of the Volkhov river got into trouble and her four companions tried to rescue her. While trying to rescue her, three others also drowned in the river.

Local media reported that the third boy was rescued safely by locals. The Indian Embassy in Moscow told X that we are working to send the bodies to the relatives as soon as possible. The student whose life has been saved is also being provided proper treatment. The Consulate General of India in St. Petersburg said that these students were studying medicine at Veliky Novgorod State University. The Consulate General said that it is working with the local authorities of Veliky Novgorod to send the bodies to the relatives as soon as possible.

Jalgaon District Collector Ayush Prasad said one body has been recovered and search operation is on for three other bodies. We contacted the embassy in Russia and the Consulate General in St Petersburg with the help of the Ministry of External Affairs. They have been very supportive to the family and we are coordinating with the judicial as well as police and disaster.
