Kerala government announces emergency financial assistance for landslide-affected families

Thiruvananthapuram/Thane: The Kerala government on Friday announced that it will provide financial assistance to people who completely lost their houses in the recent landslides in Mundakkai and Choorlamala villages in Wayanad district to help them shift to a new place. Meanwhile, farmers’ organisations have donated a sum of Rs 1 crore to the Kerala Chief Minister’s Relief Fund to help the Wayanad landslide victims. The Chief Minister’s Office in Kerala said in a statement that this assistance will be available to all the people affected by the disaster in these areas.
The statement said that the government will provide a daily allowance of Rs 300 to adults of families who have lost their source of income due to the disaster. According to the statement, this benefit will be limited to two members per family, except in cases where a family member is seriously ill or hospitalized. In that case the benefit will be extended to three members. This assistance will be provided for a maximum of 30 days. Emergency financial assistance of Rs 10,000 will also be provided to each family currently living in the camp. The government is also exploring the possibility of providing housing facilities in government-owned or publicly owned properties for those who have lost their homes in the disaster.
The District Magistrate has been asked to submit a report in this regard and as soon as the report is received, the government will fix the fare and provide assistance accordingly. 226 people died and more than 130 people are missing in the massive landslide that hit the hill district on July 30. Meanwhile, the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) and Kerala Krushak Sangh (KKS) have donated an amount of Rs 1 crore to the Kerala Chief Minister’s Relief Fund to help the Wayanad landslide victims. AIKS chief Ashok Dhawale in Thane said that the All India Kisan Sabha and its Kerala unit handed over a cheque for relief funds to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday. Dhawale said that KKS collected this amount from more than 27 thousand of its units. He said that earlier AIKS had contributed Rs 5 lakh to the All India Wayanad Relief Fund.
