In most of their rallies in the eastern state, Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah had in fact predicted that the saffron party will get 35 Lok Sabha seats in the state. Most pollsters have predicted massive gains for the BJP in Bengal, with the BJP projected to get 26-31 seats and the Trinamool Congress 11 to 14 seats.

The Trinamool Congress has claimed that three BJP MPs in Bengal are in touch with the party. The development comes two days after the Mamata Banerjee-led ruling party defied exit poll predictions to retain its hold on the Bengal fort. However, sources said the BJP has rejected the Trinamool’s claims and termed them fake. Bengal, which went to polls in all seven phases of the Lok Sabha elections, was expected to tilt towards the BJP.

Most pollsters have predicted a massive gain for the BJP in Bengal, with the BJP projected to get 26-31 seats and the Trinamool Congress 11 to 14 seats. However, the Trinamool Congress demolished the exit poll projections and limited the Modi-Shah wave. Mamata Banerjee’s party won 29 seats, bettering its tally of 2019 when the Trinamool Congress had won 22 constituencies. Meanwhile, the BJP won 12 seats this time, up from 18 in the last Lok Sabha election.

Bengal’s ruling party performed well in both urban and rural areas of the state, while the BJP secured a few seats mainly in North Bengal and rural areas. Several heavyweights of the saffron party, including Locket Chatterjee, Agnimitra Paul, Nisith Pramanik and Dilip Ghosh, lost to Trinamool Congress candidates. Ruling party candidate Nurul Islam also defeated Rekha Patra, who survived from the Sandeshkhali seat and was fielded by the BJP in Basirhat.
