Normally, the southwest monsoon enters Kerala on June 1 and advances over most parts of northeast India by June 5. Thus, according to the IMD, the southwest monsoon has entered Kerala two days before the normal date and northeast India six days before the normal date.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday said the southwest monsoon has advanced into the remaining parts of northeast Bay of Bengal, Tripura, Meghalaya and Assam and most parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim. The IMD on Thursday declared the onset of southwest monsoon over Kerala and northeast India. The monsoon made an onset over the country’s mainland two days ahead of its normal onset date on June 1.

Four people died of heatstroke at the Rourkela Government Hospital (RGH) in Sundargarh, Odisha on Friday morning, an official said.

The Prime Minister, who is meditating and practicing in Kanyakumari, said in a post on ‘X’ that the central government is closely monitoring the situation in the affected states and officials are working on the ground. In Assam, incessant rains due to the impact of Cyclone Remal have affected over two lakh people in nine districts.
