Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi on Saturday condemned the attack on Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who was hit by a man in Copenhagen. “Deeply concerned by reports of the attack on Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. We condemn the attack. Wishing our friend good health,” Modi posted on Twitter. Details about the incident were unclear, but local media reported that the attacker approached Frederiksen and pushed her forcefully as she walked through Kultorvet Square, a central piazza in Copenhagen.

Police have arrested a 39-year-old man in connection with the attack. His office confirmed in a statement on Saturday that the Danish prime minister suffered minor injuries but is okay following the incident. The suspect was due to appear at a pre-trial detention hearing at the Copenhagen District Court in Frederiksberg at 1100 GMT on Saturday. Earlier today, French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the “unacceptable” attack.

Two eyewitnesses to the incident, Anna Ravn and Marie Adrian, told the daily BT that they saw a man coming towards Frederiksen and pushing her shoulder hard, causing her to move aside. They said the prime minister did not fall. Politicians from home and abroad condemned the alleged attack. Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said an attack on a democratically elected leader is also an attack on our democracy. European Council President Charles Michel condemned the incident on the social media platform X and called it a cowardly attack.
