The Congress party held a parliamentary party meeting in the Central Hall of Parliament on Saturday and unanimously elected former party president and Rajya Sabha MP Sonia Gandhi as the chairperson of the parliamentary party. Her name was proposed by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, followed by party leaders Gaurav Gogoi, Tariq Anwar, K Sudhakaran. Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge said it is good that she (Sonia Gandhi) was re-elected as the CPP and she will continue to guide us.

At the same time, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) today (June 8) passed a resolution to appoint Rahul Gandhi as the Leader of Opposition (LOP) in the 18th Lok Sabha. After the meeting, Congress General Secretary (Organization) KC Venugopal said that the former party chief will take a decision soon. He said that the CWC has unanimously requested Rahul Gandhi to take the post of Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha. He is the best person to lead this campaign inside Parliament.

A resolution was passed in the meeting of the extended Congress Working Committee (CWC) chaired by party president Mallikarjun Kharge, praising Kharge, former president Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and general secretary Priyanka Gandhi for their ‘vigorous campaign’ during the Lok Sabha elections. It also thanked the allies of the ‘India’ alliance. Party Parliamentary Party chief Sonia Gandhi, former party president Rahul Gandhi, general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, organization general secretary KC Venugopal and other members and senior leaders of the working committee were present in the meeting of the extended working committee. The working committee also passed a resolution urging Rahul Gandhi to take over the responsibility of the Leader of the Opposition.

Venugopal said, “During the election, we raised many important issues like unemployment, inflation, women’s issues and social justice. These issues now need to be raised more effectively inside Parliament. Rahul ji is the best person to lead this campaign in Parliament.” The results of those states where the party’s performance has been disappointing were also discussed in the Working Committee meeting. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said, “A committee will be formed to review the states where our performance has not been as expected. The committee will submit its report to the Congress President.”
