Over nine kilograms of gold worth Rs 6.29 crore seized at Bengaluru airport

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized over nine kilograms of gold worth Rs 6.29 crore, an official said on Thursday.

According to the DRI official, these seizures were made in separate cases on Tuesday morning. The official said that in the first case, DRI officials had received specific information that a gang was smuggling gold hidden inside the aircraft.

“Officials of the Bengaluru branch of DRI searched a Thai Airways flight that had landed at Bengaluru International Airport. During the search, gold bars weighing 6.834 kg concealed inside a hand bag left in the aircraft were recovered,” the official said in a statement.

According to the statement, based on the documents found inside the bag and information received from the crew, the authorities identified the passengers who had allegedly left the bag in the plane. The statement said that two passengers were stopped.

The official said that after prolonged interrogation, the passengers admitted that they had hidden gold inside the plane. The government-certified investigator estimated the value of the gold to be Rs 4.77 crore.

The passengers have been arrested and the case is being investigated. On Tuesday, just hours after the first recovery, DRI officials seized 2.18 kg of gold in the form of bars while searching an Emirates Airlines flight that arrived at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport from Dubai. This recovery was made from a toilet in the plane. Investigators have estimated the value of the gold to be Rs 1.52 crore.
