The second seeded pair of India’s Rohan Bopanna and Australia’s Matthew Ebden made it to the second round of the French Open tennis tournament on Sunday by defeating the Brazilian pair of Orlando Luz and Marcelo Jorman in a tough first round match here. The Australian Open champion pair of Bopanna and Ebden had to struggle for two hours and seven minutes to win 7-5 4-6 6-4 against the Brazilian pair. Jorman and Luz were not expected to play in the tournament but got a chance to play after many pairs withdrew.

The Brazilian pair came close to pulling off an upset against the second seeded pair but Bopanna and Ebden managed to perform better at crucial moments of the match. Bopanna and Ebden broke the opponent’s serve twice to take a 4-1 lead in the first game but the Brazilian pair won four consecutive games to make the score 5-5. The Indian and Australian pair then broke Luz’s serve to take a 6-5 lead and then Ebden saved his serve, helping the second seeded pair win the first set. Zorman and Bopanna lost their serve at the start of the second set.

Ebden saved his serve in a tough contest in the fourth game but lost his serve in the eighth game, giving the Brazilian pair a 5-3 lead. Luz got four set points on his serve but thanks to Bopanna’s brilliant performance, the second seeded pair made a strong comeback and broke his serve. However, Bopanna lost his serve after this and the match was tied at 1-1. In the third and decisive set, Bopanna and Ebden broke the opponent pair’s serve in the fifth game and then won the set and the match.
