A boiler house at the Kiev water plant was partially damaged, as was the entrance to a metro station that served as a bomb shelter in the Svyatoshinkois district, although the station still operates, Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said on Telegram.

Russia attacked the Ukrainian capital Kyiv with missiles early on Monday, while falling debris from dropped munitions injured at least two people, sparked fires and damaged homes and infrastructure. Ukrainian air defence units destroyed more than 10 cruise missiles and about 10 ballistic missiles, the city’s military administration said on the Telegram messaging app. An air raid alert was in effect across Ukraine for nearly two hours before the air force declared the skies clear at 0330 GMT. Neighbouring NATO member Poland activated Polish and allied aircraft to secure its airspace during the attacks.

A boiler house at a Kyiv water plant was partially damaged, as was an entrance to a metro station that served as a bomb shelter in the Svyatoshinksi district, though the station still operates, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram. The district is home to a cluster of universities and schools. At least two people were injured in the attack, Klitschko said. Cars were set on fire throughout the city, as well as a non-residential building in the Shevchenkivskyi district, he added.

Klitschko said emergency services also went to Svyatoshinsky, Holosiivskyi and Solomenskyi districts, where debris from destroyed missiles fell. Solomenskyi is a major railway station and Kiev’s main airport. The historic neighbourhood of Svyatoshinksyi is on the city’s western edge, while Holosiivskyi is to its southwest. Reuters witnesses in Kiev heard a series of loud explosions that sounded like the work of air defence units, some in the central area.
