Pandey, who was the Maharashtra DGP, said he thought seriously about contesting the election as many people from the region (Mumbai North-West) were urging him to contest.

Former Mumbai Commissioner Sanjay Pandey joined the Congress on Thursday in the presence of Varsha Gaikwad. He was welcomed at the Mumbai Congress office. He may contest the assembly elections from Versova seat. During the Lok Sabha elections too, there were speculations about Sanjay Pandey that he would contest the elections as an independent candidate. Sanjay, a 1986 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, had recently said that he was considering contesting the Lok Sabha elections from Mumbai North Central constituency.

Pandey, who was the DGP of Maharashtra, said that he thought seriously about contesting the election as many people from the region (Mumbai North-West) were urging him to contest. Pandey said that I was thinking of entering active politics for a long time, but this time it is certain that I will contest the assembly elections. He said that so far I have decided to contest as an independent candidate from the constituency where I have been living for the last several years and support from all sections is welcome.

Pandey, who has also been the Mumbai Police Commissioner, said that earlier he had said that he had not contacted any political party. Pandey was arrested by the CBI in September 2022 in the alleged phone tapping case. After this, the Delhi High Court granted him bail.
