The Prime Minister suffered a moral defeat, the result will boost our morale: Jairam Ramesh

New Delhi. Congress said on Saturday that this Lok Sabha election has been a moral defeat for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), while the result is a morale booster for the party and the ‘India’ alliance. The BJP has won 240 seats in this election and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by it has got a total of 293 seats. Congress has won 99 seats. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh posted on ‘X’, referring to the meetings of the party’s working committee and parliamentary party, “The 2024 election is a moral defeat for Narendra Modi and the BJP, while it is a morale booster for the Indian National Congress and ‘India Janbandhan’.”

In another post, the Congress leader said, “Those beating the drum for Narendra Modi are looking for a ray of hope even in the mandate of his moral, political and personal defeat.” He said, it is being widely publicised that Narendra Modi is the first person after Jawaharlal Nehru to get the mandate three times in a row. But it is not being clarified how taking a party to 240 seats and becoming one-third of the Prime Ministers is a mandate.

“On the other hand, Nehru got 364 seats in 1952, 371 in 1957 and 361 in 1962 – a two-thirds majority each time. Yet he remained resolutely democratic and kept Parliament moving with utmost seriousness by his constant presence,” Ramesh said. “After Nehru, Modi is not the only person to have taken oath three times – consecutively or not. Atal Bihari Vajpayee took oath three times in 1996, 1998 and 1999 and Indira Gandhi four times in 1966, 1967, 1971 and 1980,” he said. Ramesh claimed that those beating the drum for a third prime minister will find anything to justify their poor electoral performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
