With the help of Ruben Trumpelman’s brilliant bowling and David Weese’s all-round performance, Namibia started their campaign in the T20 World Cup with a win by defeating Oman in the Super Over. Oman’s team, batting first, was all out for 109 runs in 19.4 overs. In response, Namibia’s team could only score 109 runs for 6 wickets in the stipulated 20 overs. Namibia scored 21 runs in the Super Over with the help of aggressive batting by Weese and captain Gerhard Erasmus. Weese then took the ball and allowed Oman to score only 10 runs. Earlier, Trumpelman became the first bowler to take wickets on the first two balls of a T20 international match.
He took four wickets for 21 runs, which is the best performance from Namibia in the T20 World Cup. He got good support from Weese who took three wickets for 28 runs. South Africa-born left-arm fast bowler Trumpelman dismissed opener Kashyap Prajapati and Oman captain Aqib Ilyas on the first two balls of the match. He took another wicket in his second over. Only four batsmen of Oman reached double figures, of which Khalid Kail scored the highest 34 runs in 39 balls. Apart from him, Zeeshan Maqsood contributed 22 and Ayan Khan contributed 15 runs.
Namibia’s batsmen also failed to perform well. From their side, John Frylink scored 45 runs in 48 balls. Apart from him, only Nicholas Davin (24) and Erasmus (13) reached double figures. From Oman’s side, Mehran Khan took three wickets for seven runs and dragged the match to the super over. Namibia captain Erasmus could have handed the ball to Trumpelman in the super over but he showed faith in Weese’s experience and this South African-born all-rounder did not disappoint the team. Weese, who was chosen as the best player of the match, said after the match, “Today my age has increased by a few years. Batting in the super over helped me. I had an idea of the game and I knew that I could hit some good shots in the super over. While bowling, I was confident that I could defend the target.
