Union Minister Smriti Irani, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from Amethi Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh, is trailing behind Congress’ Kishori Lal Sharma. According to the data released by the Election Commission, till the 14th round of counting, Smriti Irani is trailing Congress candidate Sharma by 44,872 votes.

Amethi. Union Minister Smriti Irani, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from Amethi Lok Sabha seat of Uttar Pradesh, is trailing against Congress’s Kishori Lal Sharma. According to the data released by the Election Commission, till the 14th round of counting, Smriti Irani is trailing Congress candidate Sharma by 44,872 votes. Maintaining the lead from the beginning, Sharma became stronger in the later rounds. Smriti, who caused a big upset by defeating Congress leader Rahul Gandhi from Amethi in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, is contesting from this seat for the second consecutive time. Amethi Lok Sabha seat has been considered the political stronghold of the Nehru-Gandhi family.

Initially there were speculations that Congress may field Rahul Gandhi from Amethi this time too but at the last moment the party fielded Kishori Lal Sharma, a close aide of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Meanwhile, BJP candidate Karan Bhushan Singh from Kaiserganj Lok Sabha seat is leading by more than 36 thousand votes over his nearest rival Bhagat Ram of Samajwadi Party. Karan is the son of former president of Wrestling Federation of India Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
