A Bengaluru court on Thursday issued summons to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his deputy DK Shivakumar asking them to appear in person on August 29. The case relates to their participation in a protest against repeated questioning of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the National Herald case more than two years ago. The protest was organised by the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee in June 2022 against the ‘unnecessary harassment’ of Rahul Gandhi.

Congress leaders including Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar had staged a protest in defiance of prohibitory orders. A case was later filed at the Wilson Garden police station, alleging that the protest disrupted public peace and was held without the required permission from the authorities. A similar case filed at the Shivajinagar police station was later quashed by the Karnataka High Court.

Meanwhile, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday criticized the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government’s plan to amend the law governing Waqf boards and said the move shows that the government is against minorities. The bill proposes amendments to the current Act, including ensuring representation of Muslim women and non-Muslims in such bodies.
