Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa ended his campaign on a positive note by defeating Hikaru Nakamura of the US in the final round of the Norway Chess Tournament and finished third, while world number one Magnus Carlsen lived up to his reputation and won the title. Carlsen finished with 17.5 points and won the prize money of about $65,000. He won every round, including both classical time control and Armageddon.

Nakamura, despite losing in the final round, finished second with 15.5 points while Praggnanandhaa finished third with 14.5 points. It was a relief for Praggnanandhaa that he defeated the world’s top three players in this tournament. He defeated Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana in classical time control and now his win against Nakamura ensured that he became the first player to defeat the top three players. Alireza Firouzja (13.5 points) finished fourth. He defeated China’s defending world champion Ding Liren who finished sixth and last. Caruana finished fifth with 10 points.

In the women’s category, China’s Wenjun Xu defeated compatriot Tingjie Lei to top the rankings. She scored a total of 19 points from three victories under classical time control. Anna Muzychuk finished second with 16 points. She was followed by Lei (14.5 points), India’s R Vaishali (12.5 points) and Koneru Humpy (10 points) and Pia Kramling (eight points).
