Poorvottar Lok: Protest after murder of a person in Jiribam, Manipur, indefinite curfew imposed

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders Kiren Rijiju and Tapir Gao won two Lok Sabha seats in Arunachal Pradesh on Tuesday. The Election Commission gave this information. Union Minister Rijiju and BJP candidate Gao retained their seats by winning.

The highest number of NOTA (None of the Above) votes in Assam were cast in Dibrugarh Lok Sabha constituency, from where Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal won the election, the Election Commission said. NOTA got a total of 2,40,301 votes in the state, of which the highest number of 32,255 votes were cast in Dibrugarh. The lowest number of NOTA votes were recorded in Karimganj, from where BJP’s Kripanath Malla won the election again.

Arunachal Pradesh

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders Kiren Rijiju and Tapir Gao won two Lok Sabha seats in Arunachal Pradesh on Tuesday, the Election Commission said. Union minister Rijiju and BJP candidate Gao retained their seats by winning.

The National People’s Party (NPP) will support the Pema Khandu government in Arunachal Pradesh, a senior party leader said on Friday. NPP Arunachal Pradesh unit president Thangwang Wangham said the party has accepted the mandate of the people in the recently held state assembly elections.

Assam

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday said he will reshuffle his cabinet by August 15 and at least three new faces will be included in it to form a new team ahead of the 2026 assembly elections. Addressing a press conference here, Sharma said he has not spoken to the central leadership about this and will consider the process of cabinet reshuffle in a month after the flood situation in the state improves.

The flood situation in Assam improved significantly on Thursday but about 1.3 lakh people in seven districts are still grappling with the impact of the floods. According to the latest report of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), more than 1,29,500 people have been affected by the floods in Cachar, Hailakandi, Hojai, West Karbi Anglong, Karimganj, Morigaon and Nagaon districts.

Manipur

Congress won both the Lok Sabha seats in violence-hit Manipur on Tuesday. Alfred Kangam S Arthur won the Outer Manipur seat by a margin of 85,418 votes. He defeated his nearest rival Kachui Timothy Jimik of the Naga People’s Front (NPF). Arthur got 3,84,954 votes, while Jimik got 2,99,536 votes.

The Naga People’s Front (NPF) on Thursday reaffirmed its support to the BJP government led by Chief Minister N. Biren Singh in Manipur. It denied claims of withdrawing support. Water Resources Minister and NPF’s Manipur unit president A. Newmai said, “Social media posts about NPF withdrawing support to the N. Biren Singh-led government are false.”

The state government has imposed indefinite curfew in Manipur’s Jiribam district following protests over the killing of a 59-year-old man by suspected militants, officials said on Friday. After the recovery of the body of Soibam Saratkumar Singh, locals protested by setting fire to vacant huts. Following this, the state government imposed prohibitory orders there on Thursday night.

Tripura

A huge consignment of Yaba (a type of narcotic drug) tablets was seized in West Tripura district on Friday, police said. West Tripura Superintendent of Police Kiran Kumar told reporters that based on a tip-off, a joint team of Tripura Police and Border Security Force (BSF) raided a house at Matinagar in Sepahijala district bordering Bangladesh and seized 20,000 Yaba tablets, a pistol, and four cartridges.

Meghalaya

The Congress on Tuesday wrested the Tura Lok Sabha seat in Meghalaya from the NPP but lost the Shillong seat after 15 years, the Election Commission said. The party’s candidate from Tura Lok Sabha seat, Saleng A Sangma, defeated National People’s Party (NPP) candidate Agatha K Sangma by a margin of 1,55,241 votes.
